1955 Chevy eats the Ford's lunch!
I know most of the readers here don't remember when the 1955 Chevy Bel-Air hit the showrooms, but for us old timers it was a red letter day. I had a friend that we called Possum, for which I have no explanation except originally he was from the South. Anyhow Possum had a good job and was single, so he had the means to buy a new Chevy for cash every two years. At the time he was driving his 1953 Chevy which was nice but no match for a Ford at a stoplight, but guess what was about to happen? Yep, you got it, his new car was to be a Black 1955 Chevy Bel-Air hardtop, which was about as sharp a car as had been built to that time. Of course it had a V-8 and it was about as hot a machine as there was around. Up until that year the Fords had been eating the Chevy's alive at the stoplight drags and at the dragstrips where most Chevy's didn't even try. I can only imagine how it felt to have just taken delivery of a brand new 1955 Ford and after cruising up to a stoplight looking over and seeing a guy in a 1955 Chevy with a big grin on his face. If it was his first experience with the Chevy needless to say he was not a happy camper when he got to the next light. Usually he'd try another light and then suddenly remember he needed to go a different direction. If he'd already been through the not so great experience of seeing a 55 Chevy's tail lights a couple of times then he would usually flip on his turn signal and make his escape. I know one thing for sure, there were a lot of very unhappy Ford owners and much pure pleasure for us after all the years that we had to put up with the Fords. |
