Are You Getting Enough Sleep?
Do you wake up in the morning feeling like a half-charged battery? Is is hard for you to get started, like a car with a low battery charge has a hard time starting? Just like a car battery the human body needs to be fully charged to operate at it's best. A car battery has an alternator to keep it charged and the human battery uses sleep to accomplish it's recharging. Without a good nights sleep your body won't be fully recharged and after several nights of undercharging all of a sudden you have a body that acts like a battery that almost dead. A human battery in this condition has what's called sleep deprivation and can be troublesome and occasionally devastating-dozing while driving as an example. If your battery seems to be run down should you see a sleep specialist or is it a temporary condition? Here is a questionnaire test that the specialist might use to check your sleep problem. You can also apply the test yourself and get an idea of where you stand. Be as honest with yourself as possible, otherwise it will just be a waste of your time. The test you'll be taking is called the Epworth Sleepiness Scale which was introduced in 1991 by Dr Murray Johns of Epworth Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. It is a good indicator of whether your condition is temporary or if you need to seek medical help. Here's the questionnaire with a scoring scale to give you an indication of whether you have a problem or not. How likely are you to doze off or fall asleep in the following situations, in contrast to feeling just tired? This refers to your usual way of life in recent times. Even if you have not done some of these things recently try to work out how they would have affected you. Use the following scale to choose the most appropriate number for each situation: 0 = no chance of dozing 1 = slight chance of dozing 2 = moderate chance of dozing 3 = high chance of dozing SITUATION CHANCE OF DOZING Sitting and reading ____________ Watching TV ____________ Sitting inactive in a public place (e.g a theater or a meeting) ____________ As a passenger in a car for an hour without a break ____________ Lying down to rest in the afternoon when circumstances permit ____________ Sitting and talking to someone ____________ Sitting quietly after a lunch without alcohol ____________ In a car, while stopped for a few minutes in traffic ____________ Add up the numbers and remember to be as honest and objecive as possible. Here is the interpretation of the score that was obtained from the total points you put down. 0 - 9 - average score, normal population 10 - 12 - Borderline, keep an eye on things 13 - 24 - sleep specialist advice recommended Although this test is not fool proof it is a good indication of what's happening with your health. It might be a good idea to take it several times over a period of time to get a better idea of whether you need help or are in good shape sleepwise.
