Emeralds

The emerald is a very fascinating gemstone and can be worth more than a flawless diamond. The emerald green is the most beautiful, intense and radiant green that can be imagined. Even flaws don't have much of an adverse affect on the value of an otherwise perfect emerald.

The name emerald comes from the Greek 'smaragdos' by way of the Old French 'esmeralde', and really just means 'green gemstone'. Many fantastic stories have grown up around this magnificent gem. The Incas and Aztecs of South America, where the best emeralds are still found today, regarded the emerald as a holy object. It is thought that the oldest known stones were once found near the Red Sea in Egypt. These gemstone mines, already exploited by Egyptian pharaohs between 3000 and 1500 B.C. and later referred to as 'Cleopatra's Mines', had already played out by the time they were rediscovered in the early 19th century.

In India the holy scriptures say of the precious green gems and their healing properties: 'Emeralds promise good luck ...'; and 'The emerald enhances the well-being ...'. We can see now why the treasure chests of Indian maharajas contained beautiful emeralds. One of the world's largest is the so-called 'Mogul Emerald'. It dates from 1695 and weighs 217.80 carats. One side of it is inscribed with prayer texts, and engraved on the other there are magnificent floral ornaments. This legendary emerald was auctioned by Christie's of London to an unidentified buyer for 2.2 million US Dollars on September 28th 2001.

Emerald green is considered to be the color of life and springtime. It is also the color of beauty and constant love. In ancient Rome, green was the color of Venus, the goddess of beauty and love. Even today, emerald green still is special in many cultures and religions.

The magnificent emerald green color conveys harmony, love of Nature and elemental joy of life. The ancient poet, Pliny, commented that green gladdened the eye without tiring it. Green is perceived as fresh and vivid, never as monotonous. Even though this color always changes somewhat between the bright light of day and the artificial light of a lamp, emerald green still retains its lively color.

It is said that the finest emeralds come from Columbia but at least 10 other countries have stones that equal and sometimes surpass Columbias. Like so many other things the finest stone is where you find it with no guarantee that any one country's emerald is better than another. Overall each country seems to have a unique feature in their emeralds.

Emerald collectors can rejoice in the fact that there are now many more stones on the market than there used to be, which means the choices avaiable are greater than ever.
