Organic Foods-Are They Worth It?
Okay you've decided to take the plunge and start eating healthier with organic and natural foods. You head down to the grocery store and start looking for the organic and natural products. The first thing you'll notice is the price is quite a bit higher. No problem, it'll be worth it because not only are you going to be healthier but you'll be helping the environment, surely that's got to be worth paying a little extra. Next thing we have to decide is what's the difference between natural, organic and other terms and the foods we're used to eating. You should learn what specific names mean before you decide to pay extra for something that may only be named as healthier for a marketing ploy. The term natural is associated with a number of fruit and vegetable products. Typically this is just a marketing trick to get you to buy a product. Stop and thing about it, aren't all fruits and vegetables natural. Unless it's a new food that's been developed and processed, it's natural. What you're really looking for is organic. Organic foods are grown without chemical pesticides or fertilizers. There are two main benefits to buying organic foods. First you're getting much healthier foods which is better for your body and secondly you're helping the environment keeping the chemicals from getting into nature. You'll find that the organic products are going to cost more so if you're on a budget don't buy fruit or vegetables that you can peel, like oranges or bananas. Normally most of the chemicals are in the peel, so buy organic if you're going to eat the peel, like an apple. Of course you always needs to rinse off the food before eating it. Another tricky label you'll find is "no hormones", normally pertaining to milk or meat products. You have to realize this is false because all animals naturally produce hormones. The hormones are what helps animals regulate body organs, have young and otherwise function. What the label is really trying to say is that the animal was not given any unnatural hormones, which is sometimes done to increase milk production, for instance. Regardless of the hormones the milk or meat is safe to eat and not a violation of an animal's rights. Another label you may come across is one indicating if the animal was caged or penned. This really doesn't make much of a difference in the quality or nutritional value of the meat, but is more of matter of animal rights. The meat of free range animals is considered to be tastier and of course commands a higher price. Even though these products may be more expensive, if you want to make the decision to help the environment and your health then this is the way to go. Reading labels and making healthy choices are some times difficult but healthwise may be worth it, not to mention helping to make a better earth to live on.
