Rubies

For thousands of years rubies were more valuable than diamonds and even today a natural stone over 3 carats is still worth more than a comparable sized diamond.

Rubies are one of the oldest gemstones known to man and for thousands of years were reserved for royalty, especially in India.

India was historically regarded as the birthplace of rubies until recently, mainly because of the high regard given to the stones and the fact that basically they were treated as a national treasure.

Rubies and sapphires come from the same family and are both composed of corundum, one of the hardest natural materials and second only to diamonds in hardness.

To be a ruby the stone must be red with all others in the corundum family being sapphires.

Unlike diamonds flaws don't hurt the value of a ruby anywhere as much.

A perfect ruby is almost impossible to find and would be worth a fortune.

Rubies have been found in many different countries with the most prized nowadays coming from Burma and Thailand.

Vietnam and Pakistan are also a suppliers of rubies along with several other countries including East Africa where deposits have been found recently.

The ruby is know as "the king of the gemstones" and is still regarded as a royal stone.
