Santa Maria Was the Best Kept Secret in California

Santa Maria is located on the Central Coast about half way between Los Angeles and San Francisco. Not long ago hardly anyone had heard of it. A few people kind of remembered it as they drove along Highway 101 up or down the coast.

If you tried to explain to someone where it was you would tell them it was 70 miles north of Santa Barbara or 20 miles south of Pismo Beach. Almost everyone had heard of those towns.

We started getting some additional recognition when they started labeling some of the wines produced around here as being from the Santa Maria Valley. We are famous for our strawberries and broccoli as well as the wine so a few more people began to realize where were.

Undoubtedly the main thing that put Santa Maria on the map was the Michael Jackson trial. Most of the people in town who weren't making money directly from the crowds weren't real happy because of the problems it caused us in trying to get around downtown, especially around the courthouse. One of the benefits of that trial was the fact that now Santa Maria had an identity. No longer was it identified by it's geographical location but you could tell people it was where Michael Jackson had his trial and they knew all about us.

A lot of people and myself to a certain extent are kind of sorry that Santa Maria was discovered as the traffic is (in our wasy of thinking) almost as bad as Los Angeles. Right now the freeway through town is being expanded to 6 lanes from the 4 lanes because of the traffic.

The downturn in the real estate market was almost a blessing in disguise as the agricultural fields were being turned into housing tracts at an alarming rate and the additional people moving here was making hard to shop and drive. I guess we were spoiled by the undiscovered years.

All things considered it's still a small town in most respects and a joy to live in with the best weather in the nation.
