Sapphires
When most people think of the gemstone known as the sapphire or gemstones of the sky as they are sometimes called, they picture a brilliant blue stone. Blue is the favorite color of about 50% of all people which undoubtedly has a lot to do with people thinking blue sapphire. In fact blue is only one of many colors sapphires come in. They are found in yellow, green, pink and orange just to name a few. Any sapphire with a color other than blue are called fancy sapphires to set them apart from "real" sapphires I imagine. Sapphires are composed of corundum which is the second hardest natural material right behind diamonds. A ruby
is also made from the same material and for centuries specialists argued over whether they were a sapphire or not. Finally it was decided that any sapphire that was red would be called a ruby and the rest would be called sapphires. Sapphires are found in countries such as India, Burma, Thailand, Australia, Brazil and in Africa as well as a few others. The oldest sapphire finds were is Sri Lanka and were light to mid-color. Most of the blue ones today come from Australia or Thailand. A sapphires value depends on their size, color and transparency with a major part of the value being placed on their origin. Ones from Kashmir have the highest value with the Burmese ones close behind. Recently new finds have occured in Madagascar, Tanzania and Brazil so sapphire lovers need not worry about having a good supply to choose from.
