The Adkins Diet
The health phenomenon known as the Adkin's diet, which is based on a book by Doctor Robert C. Atkins, is still the favorite of many dieters. His concept for weight loss is that you need to be concerned with the carbohydrates and not the fat that we eat. Being that most people who need to diet like foods that are high in fat this is right up their alley. Although many people have had good success in losing weight with the diet it's not for everyone. Like with any proposed diet always check with your doctor first. Another thing that the people who use the Atkin's diet like is that there is little calorie counting. As with most any diet this one has you saying goodby to junk foods and processed foods. Carbohydrates are one thing you'll be eating less of, while you're eating more foods that are high in protein. The theory of the low-carb diet is that by reducing your intake of these foods you'll enter a phase in your body called ketosis, where your body burns fat in the body for fuel instead of using the food in your diet. This will stop insulin from being produced which will prevent more fat from being stored. Because everyone's body is different this works great with some people and not so great with others. The Atkins's diet has four main stages which are: 1st stage is Induction-This stage is for the first two weeks and many people have large weight losses, some report losing 15 pounds or more, mainly due to the carbohydrates being cut down to 20 grams a day. The only carbs allowed are in vegetables and even then you are limited. 2nd stage is On Going Weight Loss where your carbs are increased to 25 grams a day. This is still fewer carbs than most people are used to and should keep the weight coming off. 3rd stage is Pre-maintenance where you can try out other food to see what carbohdyrates you can add into your diet. 4th stage is Maintenance where you've reached your weight goals and now you can eat all the good carbs you want. The premise behind the diet plan is that you won't want to eat as much of these and instead will choose fewer and healthier carbs as a way of life. Here's the part of the diet that many people don't want to hear about. Almost all successful diets include exercise to lose weight. The Atkin's diet is no different and it also calls for a healthy life style, such as quitting smoking, as an important part of your make over. Many people have questioned the severe methods of the Atkin's diet as possibly not being safe. There are also many who say that you'll probably regain your weight when you hit the maintenance stage. Of course this will be up to you. If you go off the diet completely you will gain back the weight but if you maintain like you're supposed to you'll be successful in keeping the weight off. The secret to dieting and weight loss is to find something that you are comfortable with over the long run. Most people have more success in weight loss in the beginning than they do after they've lost the weight. My theory is that they reward themselves too much for losing the weight and starting slipping back into the bad habit that got them over weight to begin with. Don't forget to check with your doctor before you start any type of diet.
