Vitamin C

Vitamin C is known as a powerful antioxidant that can neutralize harmful free radicals which cause aging and cancer. It helps manufacture collagen which is important for healthy teeth and bones.

Depending on which report you read, vitamin C is also good for combatting the common cold. Thire is much disagreement in the scientific world as to how effective it is, but most agree vitamin C does help in certain cases.

The thing vitamin C is probably most known for is curing scurvy. The lack of vitamin C available to British sailors was responsible for many cases of scurvy, so the ships started taking limes on their voyages as a source of vitamin C which cured the scurvy problem. The nickname of Limeys came from this practice.

The recommended daily dose is 90mg for men and 75mg for women with increased amounts for smokers and pregnant wormen. It's a common belief that the most vitamin C per serving is in citrus, but it's a little known fact that the most is actually found in sweet red peppers.
